Using the Wheel
How do I add entries to the wheel?
You can add entries in three ways:
- Type each name in the entry field and click "Add Entry" or press Enter
- Import entries from a CSV file using the "Import CSV" button
- Load a shared wheel link that someone has sent you
Each entry will appear in the entries list and as a segment on the wheel.
How do I control the spin animation?
You can adjust the spin duration using the "Spin Duration" dropdown in the settings panel. Choose from 3, 5, 7, or 10 seconds. The longer the duration, the more dramatic the spin effect.
You can also toggle sound effects on or off and control the volume using the settings panel.
Can I customize the wheel's appearance?
Yes! You can customize the wheel's appearance using the "Color Theme" option in the settings panel. Choose from five different themes:
- Default: A balanced blend of colors that's easy on the eyes
- Pastel: Soft, subtle colors for a gentle visual experience
- Vibrant: Bold, bright colors for maximum visual impact
- Dark: Deep, rich colors on a darker wheel
- Gradient: Smooth color transitions across the wheel
Each theme offers a unique color palette for your wheel segments.
What happens to the winners?
When the wheel selects a winner, you have two options:
- Keep in Wheel: The entry remains in the wheel for future spins
- Remove from Wheel: The entry is removed from the wheel (useful for ensuring unique winners)
All winners are recorded in the "Winners History" panel, showing the most recent 10 winners with timestamps. You can download the complete winners list as a CSV file or as a formatted PDF report.
Is there a limit to how many entries I can add?
The wheel supports up to 100 entries. This limit ensures optimal performance and visual clarity.
If you have more than 100 entries, consider breaking them into multiple wheels or sessions. For very large datasets, you can use the "Export CSV" and "Import CSV" features to manage different subsets of your data.
How do I clear all entries?
To remove all entries from the wheel, click the "Clear All" button in the Entries panel. This will remove all entries but keep your settings and winners history.
If you want to completely reset everything (entries, winners, and settings), use the "Reset Everything" button. This will return the application to its default state.
Saving and Sharing
Can I save my wheel for later use?
The wheel automatically saves your entries and settings to your local browser storage. When you return to the site, your wheel will be exactly as you left it.
For more permanent storage or sharing across devices, you can:
- Export your entries to a CSV file using the "Export CSV" button
- Create a shareable link with the "Share Wheel" button
- Download a PDF report with the "Download PDF" button
How do I share my wheel with others?
Click the "Share Wheel" button to generate a unique link that contains all your entries and settings. This link can be shared via email, messaging apps, or social media.
When someone opens the link, they'll see the exact same wheel you created, with all your entries and settings intact. This is perfect for:
- Teachers sharing with students or colleagues
- Switching between devices
- Saving specific wheel configurations for future use
How do I import entries from a CSV file?
To import entries from a CSV file:
- Click the "Import CSV" button
- Select your CSV file from your device
- The wheel will automatically import the entries from the first column of your CSV file
Note: Importing entries will replace any existing entries on the wheel. The CSV file should have one entry per row in the first column.
What's included in the PDF download?
When you click "Download PDF" in the Winners panel, the PDF report includes:
- A screenshot of your current wheel
- A list of all entries currently on the wheel
- A complete history of all winners with timestamps
- Basic information about your wheel settings
This provides comprehensive documentation of your wheel session, perfect for record-keeping or sharing results.
Privacy and Security
Is my data sent to your servers?
Random Name Wheel operates almost entirely in your browser. Your entries, settings, and winners history are stored in your browser's localStorage and remain on your device.
The only time your data leaves your device is when you use the "Share Wheel" feature, which encodes your wheel configuration in the URL itself. Even then, the data is not stored on our servers but is transmitted directly to the recipient of your shared link.
How secure are the shared wheel links?
Shared wheel links use URL-safe base64 encoding to transmit your wheel configuration. While this is not encryption, it does obfuscate the data somewhat.
The shared links do not contain personally identifiable information unless you've added such information as entries. We recommend not including sensitive personal data in your wheel entries if you plan to share the wheel.
How long is my data stored?
Your wheel data persists in your browser's localStorage until you:
- Use the "Reset Everything" button in the application
- Clear your browser's localStorage or site data
- Use private/incognito browsing, which typically does not save localStorage data
We do not store your wheel data on our servers, so we have no ability to delete it remotely.
