Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

What is the Random Name Wheel tool used for?

The Random Name Wheel is a free random name picker tool that allows you to randomly select a name or item from a list. It's commonly used by:

  • Teachers for classroom activities, student selection, and group assignments
  • Businesses for giveaways, raffles, and selecting winners
  • Families for decision making, chore assignments, and game night activities
  • Event organizers for prize drawings and participant selection
  • Teams for selecting order of presentations or task assignments

The spinning wheel makes the random selection process more engaging, transparent, and fun for all participants.

Is the Random Name Wheel truly random or can it be rigged?

The Random Name Wheel uses JavaScript's built-in random number generation to ensure fair and unbiased selection. Each spin produces a truly random result that cannot be predicted or manipulated. The wheel's spinning animation is designed to provide visual confirmation of the randomness, but the final selection is determined by a secure random algorithm, not by where the wheel visually stops.

For technical users: We use Math.random() which, while not cryptographically secure, is more than sufficient for fair selection in casual and educational contexts.

Is Random Name Wheel free to use?

Yes! Random Name Wheel is completely free to use with no hidden fees or premium features. We believe in providing accessible tools for education and fun without paywalls.

Using the Wheel

How do I use the Random Name Wheel?

Using the Random Name Wheel is simple:

  1. Add entries: Type names or items in the input field and click "Add" (or press Enter) to add them to the wheel. Each entry will appear in the list and on the wheel.
  2. Spin the wheel: Click the "SPIN" button in the center of the wheel to start the random selection.
  3. View the winner: When the wheel stops spinning, the selected name will be displayed prominently.
  4. Choose what to do with the winner: You can either remove the winner from future selections by clicking "Remove" or keep them in the wheel by clicking "Keep".
  5. Repeat as needed: Continue spinning for multiple selections.

You can also import a list of names via CSV file, export your current entries, and download your winners history at any time.

How do I add multiple names at once?

You can add multiple names at once by importing a CSV file:

  1. Click the "Import CSV" button in the Entries section
  2. Select a CSV file from your device (each name should be on a separate line or in separate cells)
  3. The names will be automatically added to the wheel

Alternatively, you can create a CSV file in any spreadsheet program by entering names in a column and saving/exporting as CSV format.

Can I save my list of names for future use?

Yes, you can save your list of names by exporting them as a CSV file:

  1. Add all your desired entries to the wheel
  2. Click the "Export CSV" button
  3. Save the file to your device

When you want to use the same list again, simply import the saved CSV file using the "Import CSV" button.

Additionally, your most recent entries are automatically saved in your browser's local storage, so they'll still be there if you close and reopen the page (unless you clear your browser data).

Features and Functionality

What happens to winners after they're selected?

When a winner is selected, you have two options:

  • Remove: Clicking the "Remove" button will remove the winner from the wheel, ensuring they won't be selected again in future spins.
  • Keep: Clicking the "Keep" button will keep the winner in the wheel, allowing them to be potentially selected again in future spins.

Regardless of which option you choose, all winners are added to the "Recent Winners" list, which maintains a history of selections with timestamps.

Can I customize the wheel's appearance?

Currently, the wheel uses a predefined set of colors that automatically adjust based on the number of entries. We're working on adding customization options in future updates, including the ability to choose custom colors, themes, and wheel styles.

Is there a limit to how many names I can add?

While there's no hard limit to the number of names you can add, the wheel works best with between 2 and 100 entries. With too many entries, the segments become very small and may be difficult to read. For optimal visual experience, we recommend keeping the number of entries under 50.

Can I save different wheels for different purposes?

Currently, the Random Name Wheel saves your entries locally in your browser. If you need to maintain different wheels for different purposes, you can:

  • Export your current entries as a CSV file
  • Clear the entries when switching to a different use case
  • Import the previously exported CSV when you want to return to a particular wheel configuration

We're planning to add the ability to save and switch between multiple wheel configurations in a future update.
